Ce fut la cinquième des sept villas tracées par Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar, fondée en 1514 sous le nom de Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe. Y sont nés : Nicolás Guillén, journaliste, poète, homme politique cubain (1902–1989), Carlos Juan Finlay, médecin cubain (1833–1915) et Yipsi Moreno, athlète cubaine (n. 1980). Y sont morts : Adolfo Horta, boxeur cubain (1957–2016), José Olallo, religieux catholique cubain (1820–1889) et Miguel Caldés Luis, joueur de baseball cubain (1970–2000). Cinquième des sept. Née sur la côte nord, près de Nuevitas, elle fut déplacée à l'intérieur des terres en 1528. Son centre historique est inscrit à l'UNESCO depuis 2008.

Joaquín de Agüero was a Cuban revolutionary. In 1843 he freed all his slaves. In 1851 he headed an insurrection against the Spanish government, in the central part of the island coinciding with the filibustering Lopez Expedition. After a desperate contest, he was defeated in battle, captured, and shot, together with his main followers.
